Why add this Byzantine Empire Gold Solidus of Phocas to your collection?

Phocas was an unknown officer in the Byzantine army who led an armed rebellion against the sitting emperor Maurice after his government made a series of unfortunate decisions regarding the military. Maurice abdicated and went into hiding, but was found and killed along with his six sons. The Phocas revolt became the first violent regime change since Constantine the Great founded the Eastern Roman Empire 300 years earlier. Phocas lost the people and was overthrown in 610 AD by an administrative division of the empire set up by Maurice years earlier in Africa. The new Emperor founded the dynastic rule of the Heraclian Emperors.

This coin highlights Phocas as a victor in battle.

The coin was designed to show that Phocas had a heavenly right to rule. The obverse is Phocas bearded, facing bust, draped and cuirassed, wearing crown with pendilia, holding a cross on globe. The reverse is a standing angel, Victory, facing the viewer, holding P-cross staff surmounted by christogram and cross on globe with the Mint mark of Constantinople.

Almost perfect grading on this specimen.

This almost perfect specimen gold solidus was graded Mint State which refers to coins that were produced for public circulation, but are still new and were never actually circulated. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided additional grading of (5/5) strike, and (4/5) surface condition. They also noted it as being clipped. This was a sneaky practice back in the times of the Byzantine Empire, where a very small bit of gold would be clipped from the coin.

An almost perfect coin to add to your collection. Purchase yours from MCM today!
