The U.S. Mint recently announced details of their scheduled offerings for 2021. Dates and some details are subject to change according to the Mint’s website. While this article does not encompass everything the United States Mint will release in 2021, here’s what collectors may want to keep in mind, so far.

2021 Collector Staples

2021 will see the regular slate of Mint Sets, Proof Sets, and Silver Proof Sets. In 2019, the United States Mint released the first-ever Lincoln cents to feature the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint in the annual Proof and Mint Set releases by including a new finish with each.

This tradition continued in 2020, when the Mint released the first-ever Nickels that were struck at the West Point Mint that also carry the “W” mint mark with their annual Proof and Mint Set releases (except for the 2020 Uncirculated Set due to production limitations related to the Covid-19 pandemic). It currently remains unclear if the 2021 sets will have any special inclusions.

The United States Mint is also continuing the Innovation Dollar series which began in 2018. The annual Happy Birthday Set and one ounce American Gold Buffalo coins are also on the schedule for early 2021. The annual Congratulations Set will also be released at some point in the year, but a release date has not yet been determined. The Presidential Silver Medal series will continue this year first featuring the 8th President Martin Van Buren, followed by William Henry Harrison, John Tyler and James K. Polk.

2021 Highlights

This upcoming year will see the start of a silver medal series that will honor the six branches of the United States military, including a U.S. Air Force Silver Medal, a U.S. Navy Silver Medal, and a U.S. Cost Guard Silver Medal, which are planned to be released in 2021. Other highlights include new American Liberty One Ounce Gold and Silver coins, a Silver Dollar honoring Christa McAuliffe, and a series of coins honoring the National Law Enforcement Memorial.

The final 5 oz. Silver America the Beautiful coin, which concludes a ten year long series and will be released early in 2021, honors the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama. 2021 also promises to be a landmark year for collectors of American Silver and Gold Eagle coins.

New American Silver and Gold Eagle Reverse Designs

As we have been reporting since it was announced, the Silver and Gold Eagle reverse designs will be changed in mid-2021. Early 2021 issues will feature their original reverse designs until the new designs debut later in the year.

The reverse of the American Gold Eagle will transition away from Miley Busiek’s Family of Eagle design which has been used on the series since its introduction to a new design that shows a bald eagle head in profile, which was designed by Jennie Norris, a member of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP).

The reverse of the Silver Eagle will transition from the heraldic eagle reverse designed by numismatic legend John Mercanti, to a new one that depicts an eagle in flight returning to its nest, which was created by Emily Damstra, another member of the AIP.

The Return of the Coin and Chronicle Series

The popular Coin and Chronicle series will be returning to honor George Herbert Walker Bush. The series initially ended in 2015, when it honored former President Ronald Reagan.

Many details have not yet been released and the date has not yet been determined. Historically, this series has included coinage and medals alongside Original Government Packaging that includes information on the president and his presidency.
