Why purchase this Azes I/II After c. 58 BC Indo-Scythians AR Drachm?
The Indo-Scythians were a subset of Scythians who migrated to various parts of central, northern, and western South Asia in the two centuries before, and the four centuries following, the birth of Christ. One of their most significant rulers was Azes I, who solidified domination over the Scythians in an area known as Gandhahra. The region roughly equated to modern day Pakistan. Historians remain unclear on whether there was one Azes or two, with some suggesting that Azes II was the same person as Azes I. Now, you have the opportunity to own a piece that dates to this important period in the history of the Indian subcontinent.
Powerful King on Horseback Design
The obverse features the king, either Azes I or Azes II, on horseback holding a whip. On the reverse, the Greek god Zeus stands facing the left side of the coin. He is flanked by several monograms.
