Why purchase this Silver Denarius of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus?

Septimius Severus seized the throne of the Roman Empire in AD 193, effectively ending the period known as the Year of the Five Emperors and founding the Severan Dynasty, which endured until AD 235. Severus was a strong leader, focused on the protection and expansion of the Empire's territories. Though he was unpopular with the Senate, he was favored among the military for his numerous reforms which included a donativum (monetary bonus) for each soldier in the amount of 250 denarii, and a thirty percent increase in annual wages. This Silver Denarius is a beautifully preserved example of a coin struck and circulated during the reign of Severus.

Remarkably Detailed Ancient Imagery

The obverse features the bust of the Emperor, facing right, bearded and crowned with a wreath of laurel. Inscribed "SEVERVS PIVS AVG."

The goddess Fortuna is illustrated seated on the reverse, surrounded by the inscription "P M TR P XI COS III P P," which describes the multiple offices and titles held by the Emperor. Symbols associated with the goddess are depicted in the image: a gubernaculum (ship's rudder), a Rota Fortunae (wheel of fortune) and a cornucopia.
