75 Years of Peace and Freedom
2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. To mark this important anniversary, the U.S. Mint has done something collectors have never seen: strike Gold and Silver Eagle Proofs featuring a commemorative privy mark!
First-Ever Privy Mark Gold and Silver Eagle Proofs
The U.S. Mint’s Gold and Silver Eagles have been around for 35 years. And in all that time, the mint has never struck these coins with special privy marks—extra marks added to denote a special occasion, celebration or other purpose. That all changes with this release!
For the first time ever, the U.S. Mint has struck Gold and Silver Eagle Proofs with a special “V75” privy mark to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in 1945.
As part of the celebration, the mint has also struck special gold and silver Proof commemoratives with all-new designs.
Special Privy Mark Design
The special privy mark includes a large letter “V” for victory along with “75” to denote the anniversary. The shape of the mark itself is important, as the outline replicates an aerial view of the Rainbow Pool, a part of the World War II Memorial in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C.<
This privy mark is located on the obverse of each coin, to the right of Liberty.
In addition to the first-ever privy mark Gold and Silver Eagle Proofs, the U.S. Mint has struck special commemoratives in one ounce of 99.9% fine silver and a half-ounce of 99.99% (24 karat) pure gold. The gold commemorative also carries a legal-tender value of $25.
The obverse displays an eagle in flight holding an olive branch. Legends include “LIBERTY,” “1945” and “World War II.” On the reverse is a pair of olive branches before a shining sun, with the words “75th Anniversary” below. This sun element echoes that of the original 1945 World War II Victory Medal, but with a touching twist. While the sun was shown rising in the original Victory Medal, it is now proudly displayed high in the sky 75 years later.
Flawless First Day of Issue with Hand-Signed Labels!
Each of these special commemorative pieces is available certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the world’s leading third-party grading services, as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition. Proof coins are struck just for collectors with frosty devices and mirrored fields. Coins with the top grade of PF70 UC take that quality even further by being certified as flawless, even under magnification!
In addition to a flawless grade, each piece is available certified by NGC as First Day of Issue (FDI). Pieces with this coveted designation must be secured from the mint and received by NGC for grading within 24 hours of the mintages’ release. They’re not just the best of the best, they’re also among the first to be sold!
But that’s not all! Each piece also comes sealed in a protective holder with a label hand-signed by John Mercanti. Mercanti not only served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, but is responsible for the original Silver Eagle reverse featured on this Silver Eagle Proof. That reverse is set to change in 2021, making this release not only a “first” but also a “last!”
Extremely Limited Mintages
If you want to secure any of these pieces for your collection, you’ll have to act fast. Just 1,945 Gold Eagle Proofs have been struck with the “V75” privy mark—an incredibly small number! That also goes for the “V75” Silver Eagle Proof, which is limited to just 75,000 coins.
Similarly, the $25 half-ounce gold commemorative is limited to just 7,500 pieces and the one-ounce silver commemorative is limited to just 20,000.
