Buffalo Nickel Designer James Earl Fraser
James Earle Fraser was already an acclaimed medallic artist by the time he was asked to prepare a new design for the nickel. He had been influenced by 15th century Italian medal artists such as Pisanello, and this was evident from the style of his work. He was therefore in an excellent position to develop a coin design that would be as good as those that appeared on ancient Greek coins, which is what Theodore Roosevelt wanted. According to the book, Numismatic Art in America, his work “achieved a perfect synthesis of the ideal, the real, and the traditional,” and this was evident in the remarkable design he produced for the Buffalo nickel.
