Why buy this 4-Piece 2019-P US 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof Set?
The four coins in this set were part of the U.S Mint's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of man's first visit to the moon. The Cold War victory fanned the flames of patriotism in American hearts while also inspiring those with an interest in science and exploration. Each coin was struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint and bears that mint's "P" mint mark. The coins are part of a mintage of 400,000 pieces. That number includes business strikes as well as proofs.
Stunning Neil Armstrong Design by Phebe Hemphill
A submission by Gary Cooper won a contest for the obverse design. It consists of a single footprint on the lunar surface, a simple yet powerful symbol of man's first visit to the celestial body. "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," the names of the NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, are inscribed along the rim at the top. This face was sculpted by US Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna.
The reverse design is the work of Phebe Hemphill. Inspired by a photograph of Buzz Aldrin on the moon, it shows Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module in the reflection of the visor on Aldrin's space helmet. This face is convex, which allows it to partially replicate the curvature of the visor. Inscriptions on this face read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
Perfect PF70 UC with Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Signature Labels
Each coin in this set was graded Proof 70 and certified Ultra Cameo by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). To received a Proof 70 grade, a coin must appear perfect under 5x magnification. Ultra Cameo certification indicates that a coin bears sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored field. The label for each coin was signed by one of four astronauts participating in the program who has flown on the Space Shuttle Discovery, including Brandenstein, Covery, Hoffman, and Thornton. Rather than being paid for their signatures, the astronauts agreed that NGC could instead make a donation to the Astronaut Scholarship Fund, which is celebrated on the label.

The successful Apollo 11 Mission and the landing of the first men on the Moon was a distinctly American triumph. Although the bulk of the credit rightfully goes to the nation behind the mission, other countries also made extremely valuable – and often overlooked – contributions to it.
