Why buy this 30-Coin Bag of 1864-1909 Indian Head Cents?

This bag of 30 Indian Head Cents is perfect for collectors who are students of American history and/or monetary history. Indian Head Cents were first issued in 1859, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. They were initially struck from curpo-nickel, and hoarding this metal was considered unthinkable. Even so, people did start hoarding them, and private mints began striking tokens to facilitate commerce. Since these tokens were so well received, the U.S Mint shrunk the size of the penny and began striking the coin in bronze in 1864. The coins in this bag were all struck somewhere from 1864-1909. Each coin in the bag is in either Fine or Very Fine condition.

Classic Indian Head Design by James Longacre

Both faces of this coin bear the designs of James Longacre. He modeled the obverse after Venus Accroupie, a sculpture that was then on display in a museum in Philadelphia. The coin gets its name because Longacre shows her wearing a feathered headdress, just as a Native American might. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and its date.

An inscription of the coin's face value, "ONE CENT," is at the center of the reverse. An open wreath and a union shield combine to encircle the inscription.
