On Jan. 31, 1971, NASA again made history with the launch of the Apollo 14 mission. Five days later, the mission became the fourth NASA mission to land men on the moon. This commemorative set from Sunshine Mint marks the 50th anniversary of the occasion. Perfect for collectors who are enthusiastic about space travel, this set consists of three medals created using scans from an authentic Robbins Medal owned by Astronaut Alan Bean, each of which has plating or antiquing from space-flown material.

  • These non-legal tenders medals were struck by the Sunshine Mint.
  • One was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine gold, another from 2 oz of .999 fine silver, and a third from 5 oz of .999 fine silver.
  • The gold medal is part of a mintage of just 100 pieces, while 500 2 oz silver, and 350 5 oz silver pieces were struck.
  • The two silver medals were antiqued with an alloy that includes space-flown material.
  • The moon on the gold piece was layered in space-flown gold.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded each of these medals Mint State 70.

Striking Apollo 14 Mission Logo Design

The three medals in this set share the same designs. Obverse: The obverse bears the official mission logo of Apollo 14. The moon is large, while the earth is further away. A star has launched from the earth and is headed to the moon. A rim frame bears inscriptions of the name of the mission, "APOLLO 14," and its crew members, "SHEPARD," "ROOSA," and "MITCHELL."

Reverse: At the top of the reverse is an inscription of the respective medal's metal content and purity, while the anniversary dates, "1971-2021," are at the bottom. Between them are key mission dates, "LAUNCHED JAN. 31, 1971," "LANDED FEB. 5, 1971," and "RETURNED FEB. 9, 1971." Inscriptions along the rim note the names of the crew members, "ALAN B. SHEPARD JR," "STUART A ROOSA," and "EDGAR D. MITCHELL."

Perfect MS70

Each of the three pieces in this set earned Mint State 70 grades from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). To earn that grade, a medal must appear perfect under 5x magnification.
