Obverse: The obverse features the Great Wall meandering across the rugged mountain peaks of China, with the date of issue "2021" in the foliage at left. Above, each medal is inscribed with its weight, metallic content and purity.

Reverse: The mythic Black Warrior creature is depicted on the reverse, featuring a black tortoise with a dragon's head snarling at the fierce serpent wrapped around its shell. Auspicious clouds dramatically envelop an ornate compass rose above, near the inscription "XUAN WU OF THE NORTH - WINTER." The beautifully detailed interpretation of the Xuan Wu was crafted by accomplished Shenzhen Mint coin designer Song Fei.
