Why order this Set of 3 1885-O Silver Morgan Dollars from the Great Montana Collection?
These Morgan 1885-O Silver Dollars were part of the Great Montana Collection, one of the biggest finds of the 20th century. George Bouvier of Deer Lodge, Montana assembled the collection due to his mistrust of banks. These are three of the 17,000 coins that were a part of it. Each of these coins was struck from .7734 troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the New Orleans Mint, which is represented by an "O" mint mark at the bottom of the reverse.
Patriotic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, who designed both faces of these coins, chose an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, for Liberty, who had traditionally been depicted as a Greek-style figure. The obverse bears a left-side portrait of her wearing a ribbon, a crown of cotton and wheat, and a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom.
An eagle spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. A laurel wreath encircles most of it, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head.
The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded each of these coins Mint State 64. An MS64 grade indicates that the coin has a good strike and excellent eye appeal overall.
