Why purchase this 2-piece Type Set of pristine First Day of Issue Proof 2021-W American Silver Eagle coins?
The U.S. Mint's American Silver Eagle series has undergone a monumental transformation in 2021! The series has been annually produced with fixed imagery since 1986. For the first time in the series history, the Mint has introduced a re-designed reverse for the series. That introduction has occurred mid-year, resulting in two different types of Silver Eagle coins to be issued with the 2021 date, the original Type-1 Heraldic Eagle image and the Type-2 Eagle Landing design.
Timeless Rendition of Lady Liberty Paired with Distinctive Eagle Imagery
Obverse: Lady Liberty appears on each obverse, as a powerful vision of patriotic beauty enveloped in the draping folds of an American flag. She is portrayed walking towards the rising sun while holding a bundle of oak and laurel branches, which symbolize honor, strength and victory. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2021." Award-winning sculptor Adolph A. Weinman originally created this personification of Liberty for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The image has graced the obverse of the Silver Eagle since the series' inception and will remain on the Type-2 style coin, with the addition of one design element. For the first time in the history of the series, the Type-2 Silver Eagle includes the artist's "AW" monogram beneath the motto.
Type-1 Reverse, minted 1986 until mid-2021: A heraldic eagle is illustrated on the reverse, with its wings outstretched behind a striped shield. Inspired by the Great Seal of the United States, the eagle grasps a cluster of arrows and an olive branch, with thirteen stars above. This design is an example of the artistry of sculptor/engraver John Mercanti, the currently retired 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.<./p>
Type-2 Reverse, introduced in 2021: An eagle adorns the reverse, depicted in lifelike flight, with its wings lifted to slow its descent. The beautiful bird's talons are curved around a branch of oak, an emblem representing wisdom and longevity. This stunning interpretation of the national bird is the work of nature illustrator Emily Damstra, whose additional credits include multiple coinage designs for the U.S. and Royal Canadian Mints, and a set of stamp designs for the United Nations Postal Administration. Inscriptions of both reverse types include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the "W" Mint mark of the West Point Mint.
