The U.S. Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle series in 1986. For the first thirty-five years of the series, the coin was released without any change to its design. In 2021, the Mint has initiated a major alteration to the design for the first time. While the classic rendition of Lady Liberty remains on the obverse, the reverse has transitioned from the original Heraldic Eagle (Type-1) image to a newly designed realistic rendition of an Eagle Landing (Type-2). This beautiful set includes both Silver Eagle types, each minted in magnificent proof format by the San Francisco Mint. Due to the Mint’s annual production schedule, the final Type-1 proof Silver Eagle release with an “S” Mint mark was issued in 2020. The 2021-S Silver Eagle represents the first San Francisco proof release to feature the Type-2 design.

Breathtaking Silver Eagle Designs
Obverse: Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse walking towards a new day’s sun, while enveloped in the folds of the flag of the United States. She carries a bouquet of oak and laurel branches, which symbolize strength and victory. Inscribed “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the date of issue “2020” or “2021.” This time-honored personification of Liberty first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by renowned early 20th century sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. Obverse imagery for each coin is the same, however the 2021-S Type-2 Silver Eagle coin includes the artist’s initials “AW” for the first time in the history of the series.
2020-S Type-1 Reverse: A heraldic eagle is depicted on the reverse, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars above. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the San Francisco Mint mark “S.” The patriotic image is the work of prolific sculptor John Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s currently retired 12th Chief Engraver. 2021-S Type-2 Reverse: A beautifully detailed eagle is depicted on the reverse with its wings raised in preparation for landing. The national bird grasps a branch of oak, which is a representation of strength, honor and endurance. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR” and “S.” The Eagle Landing graphic was created by acclaimed science illustrator Emily Damstra, whose design credits include more than forty coin and medal images for the Mints of the U.S. and Canada.
Virtually Flawless Proof 69 Set
This exciting 2020-S Type-1 and 2021-S Type-2 American Silver Eagle Proof coin set was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for review. Each coin in the set received the grade of Proof 69 Ultra Cameo (UC) for its incredibly sharp strike, nearly perfect surfaces, and astounding amount of visual contrast between its frosted and mirrored finishes. The coins are encapsulated together in a sonically sealed NGC dual coin protective holder, accompanied by a specially designed label honoring the Silver Eagle reverse imagery.
