Jolly Roger is the English term for a flag flown by pirate ships in the early 18th century to signal their intent to attack. The inaugural issue commemorates the flag of Captain John Rackham, aka Calico Jack, who was active in the West Indies and off the coat of Bermuda from 1718-1720.
Charming Calico Jack DesignObverse: The obverse features a right facing rendition of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II wearing a jeweled tiara. The portrait is contrasted against a background of wavy horizontal lines, which are reminiscent of the rippling surface of the ocean, and encircled by a border of tiny cresting waves. Surrounding inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II," "NIUE," "TWO DOLLARS" and the date of issue "2022." The likeness of the monarch was created by renowned British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. Reverse: The distinctive Jolly Roger pirate flag design of Calico Jack is centered on the reverse, depicting a forward facing skull above a pair of crossed cutlass style swords. "CALICO JACK" is inscribed above, with "JOLLY ROGER" and "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER" curving below. The European Mint's "EM" Mint mark is located beneath the intersection of the swords. The identical background pattern and border design from the obverse completes the design.
