Bullion releases of the series are minted with the Coin of the Year (COTY) Award winning design by acclaimed British sculptor Philip Nathan, which was originally created for the introduction of the Gold Britannia in 1987. This 2022 dated Silver Britannia coin is minted with a set of complex security features that were introduced to the series in 2021.
Britannia as Great Britain's GuardianObverse: The obverse is graced with a right facing effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, contrasted against a guilloche patterned field inscribed with "ELIZABETH II," "D.G. REG. F.D." and "2 POUNDS." The distinctive likeness was created in 2015 by Jody Clark, who is notably the first sculptor of The Royal Mint to design a monarch's coinage effigy in more than a century. Reverse: The reverse depicts Britannia standing on Great Britain's shores, armed with a trident, an olive branch and a patriotic shield. Inscribed "BRITANNIA," "2022," "1 OZ" and "999 FINE SILVER." Four innovative anti-counterfeit devices are included within the classic design: a meticulously detailed line texture upon Britannia's shield, a circular latent emblem that alternates between a trident and a padlock, an attractive light-refracting, stippled background wave pattern, and a thin frame encircling Britannia that is inscribed repeatedly with "DECUS ET TUTAMEN," which translates from Latin as a phrase declaring its literal purpose as "an ornament and a safeguard."
