Obverse: The obverse is adorned with a right facing portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II wearing a delicate jeweled tiara. The effigy is encircled by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “5 DOLLARS,” “COOK ISLANDS” and the date of issue “2022.” This interpretation of Great Britain’s longest reigning monarch was created in 1998 by acclaimed British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley.
Reverse: The reverse features a breathtaking, modernized rendition of the Athenian Owl. Similar to the ancient coin, a sprig of olive and a crescent-shaped moon hover above the adorable feathered creature’s back. The coin’s vertical inscription of “CI,” which represents Cook Islands, is also cleverly borrowed from the ancient tetradrachm. The inscription is positioned as on the original Greek coin, in the location of the three character abbreviation for “of the Athenians.”
