2022 is a big year for the Chinese Panda series of bullion coins. The very first Gold Pandas were released in 1982, so 2022 is the 40th anniversary of the series and China is proud to mark this occasion. The first thing to note about the 2022 Panda shown here is that it is made of platinum. While Gold Pandas and Silver Pandas have been reliably issued for decades, Platinum Pandas are another story. 2022 isn’t the first time that Platinum Pandas have been struck, but it is the first time that a Brilliant Uncirculated Platinum Panda has been issued. Since 2022 Pandas feature a special privy mark to honor the 40th anniversary of the series, 2022 Platinum Panda issues are also notably the first Platinum Pandas in the series to ever feature a privy mark!

40th Anniversary Panda Design for 2022
Obverse: The obverse of this small platinum coin displays the same design that is shared by other coins of the series. The stunning structure pictured at the center of the design is the Temple of Heaven, one of Beijing’s most well-known structures.
Reverse: The weight and purity are inscribed on the reverse. The design on this side shows two panda cubs as they slide down a snow covered hill. This design is a continuation of the “series in a series” that began in 2019 and that will show pandas growing from cubs into full maturity. Towards the left edge of the design there is a special privy mark for the 40th anniversary.
