Featuring the Classic Maple Leaf Design of Walter Ott
Obverse: On the obverse, Susanna Blunt's right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II shows Canada's head of state wearing earrings and a necklace but no crown, striking a note of Canadian independence. Her effigy is set against a background of a maple leaf field pattern. Her name, "ELIZABETH II," arches over the image, while the coin's respective face value, either "50 DOLLARS" or "200 DOLLARS," joins the date, "2022," below. Susanna Blunt is the daughter of an English banker who was born in Harbin, China. She studied in both Canada and England and was the first woman to have a one-woman show in Calgary's Canadian Art Gallery.
Reverse: On the reverse is Walter Ott's classic maple leaf design. Struck deeply into the coin, it is gilt in rose gold, as is the edge. The issuing country's name, "CANADA," arches over the image, and its purity, "9999," is noted to the leaf's left and right. On the bottom half of the rim are inscriptions of the coin's metal content in English and French, reading, "FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR" or "FINE GOLD 2 OZ OR PUR." Walter Ott received his training in Austria before moving to Canada in 1952. He worked with the Royal Canadian Mint for more than two decades, part of which he spent as the institution's Director of Art and Chief Engraver.
