Chinese New Year and their traditional Lunar calendar is of course a huge occasion in China, but it is also celebrated by many across the world as well. In fact, many Mints offer some time of Lunar themed coin. The specimen shown here was struck by the Royal Australian Mint.This piece is technically a coin because of its legal tender status, although it has the shape of a small rectangular ingot. This unique piece was minted for 2022 with a Year of the Tiger design. Like most other Lunar themed pieces, production was limited.

Traditional Year of the Tiger Design
Obverse: If you’re looking for the date or face value, both of these can be found on the obverse of this coin. The central portion of this surface features a detailed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. A bit of rock and some pine branches are displayed here as well.
Reverse: The rocky area and pine branches have been included in the design on this side as well. The reverse shows a tiger as it carefully moves down onto the rocky area. This design is inscribed with “YEAR OF THE TIGER” and also displays the Chinese symbol for tiger.
GEM BU in Mint Capsule and Box
This coin is still in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition which is the same condition it was in when it left the Royal Australian Mint. This gorgeous legal tender bar is protected by its original Mint capsule and box.
