The Mint looked to coinage designs of the past for the series, deciding to borrow the imagery from the 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel. The Buffalo Nickel's time-honored design is the work of acclaimed early 20th century American sculptor James Earle Fraser.
Historic Coinage Design RevivalObverse: A hammered field serves as the backdrop to a handsome portrait of a Native American chief on the obverse. The word "LIBERTY" curves at the upper right, with the date "2022" and Fraser's initial "F" located upon the chief's shoulder. Reverse: An American buffalo is showcased on the reverse, standing on a mound of dirt bearing the inscriptions "$50" and "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD." A similar hammered background surrounds the creature containing the additional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Perfect Mint State 70This 2022 American Gold Buffalo 1 oz. bullion coin was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for review within twenty-four hours of release, qualifying for the First Day of Issue attribution.
