Striking Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Obverse: The most beautiful design ever to appear on an American coin, the obverse of the Double Eagle of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, features on the obverse. On Type-2 Gold Eagles, the U.S. Mint used its historical assets to make the obverse design closer to the original design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. A strong wind blows Liberty's garment as she stands in a strong wind facing the holder against a backdrop of the rays of the morning sun. Her name, "LIBERTY," and the date, "2022," are inscribed on this face. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was a sculptor and Irish immigrant. Besides his direct artistic contributions, he also founded a community for artists known as the Cornish colony.

Reverse: Renata Gordon sculpted a design by Jennie Norris for the reverse. It depicts a closeup view of a bald eagle in left-side profile. Two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed above, while rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's face value, "5 DOLLARS," and its metal content, "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD." Jennie Norris does Graphic Design for the University of Arizona. She is an award winning fine artist and a professional illustrator.
