In 2021, after thirty-five years of issue, the Mint introduced a new reverse design for the series for the first time ever. 2022 represents the second year of issue of the Type-2 Gold Eagle.
Gorgeous Type-2 Gold Eagle ImageryObverse: On the obverse, Lady Liberty is portrayed confidently stepping forward carrying a flaming torch of enlightenment and an olive branch of peace, while the sun's rays radiate from the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building behind her. The image is surrounded by fifty stars, and includes the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "2022." This powerful symbolic image first appeared on the 1907 Gold Double Eagle coin, the design of which was created by acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, in collaboration with President Theodore Roosevelt. Reverse: The head of an eagle is centered on the reverse, facing left. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "5 DOLLARS" and "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD." This eagle portrait, which defines the Type-2 Gold Eagle style, is the first design by professional graphic artist Jennie Norris for the U.S. Mint since becoming a member of the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program.
