Featuring a Pair of Patriotic Designs

Obverse: Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half Dollar lends this piece its obverse design. Liberty carries branches in the foreground as she extends her right hand forward, as though greeting the new day as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. “LIBERTY” is inscribed at the top of this face, while other obverse inscriptions include the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021.” Adolph Weinman is best known for two of his biggest contributions to American numismatics in the early 20th century, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He also created numerous sculptures, some of which are displayed in various American cities to this day.

Reverse: The reverse features an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. An eagle clutches arrows, symbols of war, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, under thirteen stars. These images are encircled by three rim inscriptions, which provide the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the weight of the coin, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and its face value, “ONE DOLLAR.” The legendary John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, a post he held for just part of the time that he was with the institution. Over the course of his career, he designed more coins and medals than anyone else in American history.
