Powerful Heraldic Eagle Design by John Mercanti
Obverse: The obverse design comes from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap, Liberty carries laurel and oak branches in the early morning sun. Her name, "LIBERTY," joins the date, "2021," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," among the obverse inscriptions. Adolph Weinman's best known numismatic contributions were the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. He also designed medals and was a sculptor, whose work can still be seen in several American cities.
Reverse: The reverse bears a heraldic eagle design that John Mercanti modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. The bird protects a union shield while clutching arrows and an olive branch under thirteen stars, which represent the original states. Inscriptions on the rim offer the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's metal content, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti is the most prolific designer of medals and coins in American history. He spent over three and a half decades with the US Mint, part of which he served as its Chief Engraver.

Introduced simultaneously in 1986, the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle -were both intended to create an American bullion coin that would compete with similar coins from other world mints. However, they soon became much more than that.
Since 1986, the reverse of the Silver Eagle has remained relatively unchanged. However, 2021 will feature a fresh reverse design created by sculptor-artist Emily Damstra Dubbed the Type-2 design, in addition to the new reverse, the new design also includes an anti-counterfeit reeded edge gap security measure and the inclusion of Adolph Weinman’s artist initials on the obverse for the first time ever. So, who is Emily Damstra and why was her design chosen for the new Silver Eagle reverse?
