Featuring for the Final Time John Mercanti's Heraldic Eagle Design
Obverse: On the obverse is Adolph Weinmnan's Walking Liberty design, which first appeared on the half dollar from 1916-1947. The morning sun begins to emerge from beyond the horizon as Liberty, draped in the American flag, carries laurel and oak branches in the foreground. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed at the top of this face, while the date, "2021," and national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," also appear on this face. Adolph Weinman is best known among coin collectors for designing the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He also designed medals and was a prominent sculptor, whose work can still be seen in a number of cities across America.
Reverse: The reverse bears a heraldic eagle design that was created by John Mercanti, who modeled it off of the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle holds symbols of military readiness, arrows, and peace, an olive branch, as it protects a union shield under thirteen stars, which represent the original states. Arching over the image is the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The coin's metal content, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed on the bottom half of the rim. John Mercanti has designed more medals and coins that anyone else in the history of the US Mint. He spent over three and a half decades with the institution, some of which he served as its Chief Engraver.
