Description

Why does this First Day of Issue 2021-W Type-2 Burnished American Silver Eagle coin belong in your collection?

The U.S. Mint has issued the American Silver Eagle since 1986. In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the series, the Mint has introduced a brand new reverse design (Type-2) in 2021 for the first time in the history of the series. This first year of issue 2021 Type-2 style Silver Eagle coin represents the first release with a satiny burnished finish.

  • The new Type-2 Eagle Landing reverse design is featured on this Burnished 2021-W American Silver Eagle coin.
  • The 40.60 mm diameter coin is a product of the West Point Mint.
  • The coin is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver.
  • For counterfeit prevention, the coin is minted with an interrupted reeded edge.
  • The silver dollar is authenticated as a First Day of Issue release.
  • A specially designed 35th Anniversary certification label is included with the coin.

Magnificent Silver Eagle Type-2 Design

Obverse: The obverse illustrates Lady Liberty elegantly walking towards the rising sun, while enveloped in the stars and stripes of the United States. The young lady is portrayed carrying a bouquet of oak and laurel branches, which are symbolic of strength, victory and honor. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2021.” This time-honored image is adapted from the design created by renowned medallic sculptor Adolph A. Weinman for the U.S. circulating half dollar minted from 1916-1947. The basic design is primarily unaltered for the Type-2 obverse, with the exception of the addition of Mr. Weinman’s “AW” monogram beneath the motto first time in the series’ history.

Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle is depicted gripping a branch of oak, as it lifts its wings to slow its descent. The national bird is encircled by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “ONE DOLLAR,” along with the “W” Mint mark of the West Point Mint. The gorgeous Type-2 Eagle Landing graphic is credited to acclaimed artist Emily Damstra, whose U.S. Mint design credits also include the reverses of the 2019 River of No Return Wilderness and the 2020 Tallgrass Prairie America the Beautiful quarters.
