Why does this perfectly graded First Day of Issue Burnished 2021-W American Silver Eagle Type-2 coin belong in your collection?
For more than three decades, the U.S. Mint has issued the American Silver Eagle series with no alterations to the coin's imagery. That has changed in 2021, with the mid-year introduction of the new Type-2 reverse design, which features a rendition of an eagle preparing to land. This 2021 dated Type-2 Silver Eagle is minted with a satiny burnished (Uncirculated) finish, a variety of the silver dollar that was added to the series in 2006 in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Stunning Type-2 Silver Eagle Imagery
Obverse: The obverse features an image of Lady Liberty elegantly draped in an American flag, while walking towards the rising sun with her right arm reaching forward in a welcoming gesture. In her left arm, she cradles a bouquet of oak and laurel branches, which symbolize strength and triumph. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2021." This personification of Liberty first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, designed by acclaimed architectural and medallic sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. Although the iconic Walking Liberty graphic has graced the Silver Eagle series since its launch in 1986, the Type-2 style marks the first time that Mr. Weinman's "AW" monogram is included in the design.
Reverse: A beautiful eagle is showcased on the reverse as it prepares to land, with is wings raised and a branch of oak in its grip. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "W." The Type-2 Eagle Landing image was created by Emily Damstra, an award-winning science illustrator and one of the twenty-seven artists in the U.S. Mint's Artistic Infusion Program. Ms. Damstra's design was brought to reality by U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver Michael Gaudioso, sculptor of the 2021 Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter reverse.
