Why purchase this 2021-(W) West Point Mint American Silver Eagle?
Thanks to a revelation made in response to a request made under the Freedom of Information Act, collectors now know that Silver Eagles are struck at multiple mints. This piece was struck at the West Point Mint, but does not bear its "W" mint mark. Part of the 35th anniversary issue of the American Silver Eagle Series, this will be one of the last bullion coins to bear the original reverse design, as a new design will be struck on Silver Eagles starting in the middle of 2021.
Featuring Iconic Designs by Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: The coin's obverse bears Adolph Weinman's famous Walking Liberty design. Liberty strides confidently draped in the American flag and carrying branches against a sunrise backdrop. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed on the rim, as are the date, "2021,' and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Adolph Weinman contributed two of the best known works of America's early 20th century numismatic renaissance, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He was also a sculptor, whose work remains on display in numerous American cities.
Reverse: John Mercanti created his reverse design specifically for the Silver Eagle Series. Modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States, it consists of an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch while protecting a union shield and thirteen stars, which represent the original states. This image is encircled by three rim inscriptions, which read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti spent over thirty-five years with the US Mint, part of which he spent as its Chief Engraver. He remains the most prolific designer of coins and medals in United States history.
