The U.S. Mint’s Burnished American Gold Eagle coin featuring the recently debuted Jennie Norris reverse was released in the Fall of 2021.
The American Gold Eagle series was first released in 1986 and has remained one of the most trusted gold issues since then. The series is America’s official gold bullion coin. These coins are struck on 91.67% pure gold planchets, are legal tender and bear various values up to $50. The coins were authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985.
The Uncirculated or “Burnished” finish is struck at the U.S. Mint’s West Point branch and bullion depository and first debuted in 2006. The burnished coins feature the iconic “W” mint mark and typically have lower mintages than their numismatic cousins, the Proof-finish American Gold Eagles.
New in 2021, this Burnished American Gold Eagle issue will include an anti-counterfeit reeded edge variation
The obverse design that appears in the 2021 version of the coin is the same one that was featured at the beginning of the series, albeit with slight modifications as in 2021 the U.S. Mint returned to their historical assets resulting in a design that more closely resembled Saint-Gaudens’ original design.
The famed “Double Eagle” $20 obverse image of a full-length Lady Liberty first appeared in 1907 and disappeared in 1933 with the cessation of circulating gold coinage in the United States. The iconic design reappeared in 1986 with this spectacular American Gold Eagle coinage series. A windswept Liberty is depicted standing in the dawn of a new day as she holds the Torch of Freedom and Enlightenment and the Olive Branch of Peace. This design is widely regarded as the most beautiful image ever struck in gold by the U.S. Mint.
The reverse of the coin was designed by Jennie Norris. The newly design reverse features the left-facing profile portrait of an American Bald Eagle. This has been called the “Eagle Profile” reverse and has been dubbed the “Type 2” reverse by those in the numismatic industry.
Ms. Norris is part of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). This is her first numismatic design. She works at the University of Arizona – Tucson and is a working commercial designer and artist.
