Why purchase this 2021-W American Type 2 1 oz Silver Eagle Proof?
The Proof Silver Eagle marks its 35th anniversary in 2021, and the United States Mint is celebrating with a new reverse design. This Type 2 version of the coin started replacing the original Heraldic Eagle design in mid-2021. That means that collectors can own two types of Silver Eagle Proofs from the same year each bearing a different numismatic design. The new version also includes Adolph Weinman's artist mark for the first time and a new security feature that makes counterfeiting more difficult.
Powerful Landing Eagle Design by Emily Damstra
Obverse: The traditional obverse design, Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty, returns to the obverse. This time, his artist mark is also included. The image shows Liberty carrying branches while draped in the American flag. Inscriptions on the obverse note her name, "LIBERTY," the date, "2021," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Adolph Weinman is best known as the designer of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime, though he also made other numismatic contributions. In addition to his work on coins and medals, he also sculpted numerous pieces, some of which are displayed in cities across the United States.
Reverse: The reverse features a new Landing Eagle design that was created by Emily Damstra. An eagle spreads its wings as it prepares to land while carrying an oak branch. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is inscribed just inside the rim inscriptions. Those rim inscriptions provide the name of the country that issued the coin, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," its face value, "ONE DOLLAR," and its metal content, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER."
Impeccable PF70 UC FR
This coin earned Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) highest grade, Proof 70, which is reserved exclusively for coins that appear perfect under 5x magnification. This example was also certified Ultra Cameo (UC) and First Releases (FR). The FR designation means that it was submitted for grading within a month of its initial release from the mint, while UC credits it for having particularly sharp contrasts between mirrored and frosted areas.
