Why add the 2021-W 1 oz Burnished Gold American Eagle Type 2 $50 in OGP to your collection?
This 2021-W 1 oz. Burnished Gold American Eagle Type 2 $50 OGP is the first appearance of the famed “Type 2” Gold Eagle reverse on a satiny burnished finish. This issue is an excellent way to honor this landmark transition for the United States Mint’s beloved American Gold Eagle series in your collection.
- The series was introduced in 1986 by the U.S. Mint as the official gold bullion coin of the United States.
- The unveiling of the Type 2 reverse coincides with the 35th Anniversary of the series.
- This numismatic coin was struck on a burnished 91.67% pure gold planchet containing 1 oz. of gold bullion.
- This specimen bears a $50 face value.
- The coin was struck at the West Point branch of the Mint.
- The coin features a “reeding gap variation” security measure and enhanced and refreshed design elements on the obverse.
Remarkable Historic Designs
Obverse: The obverse of the coin borrows the image of Lady Liberty walking forward over the American landscape originally used on the $20 Gold “Double Eagle.” Certain design elements were refreshed to more accurately reflect the original vision of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Reverse: The reverse of the coin features a design by the Jennie Norris, a newcomer to the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program. This is her first numismatic design. The design depicts the portrait of a bald eagle staring with intensity.
Stunning Burnished Example with OGP
Burnished coins require special handling and preparation like their proof quality cousins. They have a spectacular “frosty, uniform appearance” all over the coin. In addition to their attractive appearance, they tend to have limited mintage numbers. The coin is housed in an attractive display box and is protected in the original mint capsule.
