Why add this pristine First Day of Issue 1 oz. 2021-W Burnished American Gold Eagle Type-2 coin to your collection?
In 2021, after thirty-five years of unchanged imagery, the U.S. Mint has introduced a new design for the reverse of its American Gold Eagle series. The classic eagle family (Type-1) has been replaced with a single eagle in a portrait style rendition (Type-2). In addition to the new reverse graphic, the obverse depiction of Lady Liberty has been modified to more closely reflect the original early 20th century design. This 2021 dated Gold Eagle coin features a combination of the Type-2 design style with a satiny burnished finish for the first time ever! The burnished (Uncirculated) variety of the Gold Eagle was introduced to the series in honor of its 20th anniversary in 2006.
Magnificent Patriotic Imagery
Obverse: The obverse features Lady Liberty encircled by fifty stars, walking forward while grasping an olive branch of peace and a flaming torch of enlightenment. In the background, stylized rays of the sun emanate from the U.S. Capitol Building. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "2021," the West Point Mint mark "W" and the "ASG" monogram, which credits acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens with the timeless imagery, which first appeared on the 1907 Gold Double Eagle coin. Legacy details to the Capitol Building, stars, torch and sun rays, have been restored for the Type-2 design, based upon the original bronze cast.
Reverse: The meticulously detailed head of an eagle with its gaze focused to the left is centered on the reverse. Inscribed "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "50 DOLLARS" and "1 OZ. FINE GOLD." The eagle portrait image is the first U.S. Mint design by professional graphic artist Jennie Norris, as a member of the Artistic Infusion Program.
