Why should this First Day of Issue Proof 2021-W American Gold Eagle Type-2 coin be a part of your collection?
The American Gold Eagle series has been annually issued by the U.S. Mint since 1986, with no change to the design in its thirty-five years of issue. This Gold Eagle coin features a newly designed reverse, launched by the Mint mid-year in 2021. The iconic Type-1 family of eagles image has transitioned to the Type-2 design, which depicts a single eagle in portrait style.
Magnificent Type-2 Imagery
Obverse: The obverse features the time-honored personification of Liberty borrowed from the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. Lady Liberty is portrayed confidently strolling forward, while carrying a flaming torch and olive branch, as the sun rises over the distinctive dome of the U.S. Capitol Building in the background. The image is accompanied by a border of fifty stars, along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "2021" and "W." This interpretation of Liberty is the work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, an acclaimed sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th century. Mr. Saint-Gaudens' "ASG" monogram is located at the bottom right, adjacent to a branch of oak, which symbolizes wisdom and strength. Although the Type-2 obverse features the same rendition of Ms. Liberty that has appeared on the Gold Eagle series since 1986, the image includes the restoration of detailing based upon the original bronze cast, to the Capitol Building, stars, torch and sun rays.
Reverse: The reverse is graced with a close-up profile view of the national bird. The left facing eagle is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "10 DOLLARS" and "1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD." The Type-2 eagle portrait is a stunning example of the artistry of award-winning Arizona based professional graphic designer Jennie Norris. The image represents Ms. Norris' first design for the U.S. Mint as an Artistic Infusion Program Artist.
