Why add this flawless First Day of Issue 2021-W Type-2 American Gold Eagle proof coin to your collection of precious metal treasures?
2021 is a milestone year for the U.S. Mint's American Gold Eagle series. In honor of the series' thirty-fifth anniversary, the Mint has introduced a major design change for the first time ever. The reverse now features a stunning portrait of a solitary eagle (Type-2), a design which replaces the classic eagle family image (Type-1) that has graced the series since its inception in 1986.
Astoundingly Detailed Type-2 Gold Eagle Imagery
Obverse: The obverse design is primarily unaltered, featuring the timeless rendition of Lady Liberty surrounded by fifty stars, as she steps forward near a sprig of oak foliage, which symbolizes strength, honor and longevity. She carries an olive branch and torch aflame, while stylized rays of sun glow in the background above the U.S. Capitol Building. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "2021," the "W" Mint mark and the artist's overlapping initials "ASG." The image first appeared on the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle coin designed by prolific late 19th and early 20th century sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Restored legacy details based upon the original bronze cast have been made to the Type-2 release, sharpening elements of the Capitol Building, stars, torch and sun rays.
Reverse: A gorgeous left facing portrait of an eagle is centered on the reverse. Surrounding inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "10 DOLLARS" and "1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD." The eagle portrait Type-2 image is the work of acclaimed professional graphic designer Jennie Norris. As a new member of the U.S. Mint's Artistic Infusion Program, the Gold Eagle Type-2 reverse graphic is Ms. Norris' first-ever coin design.
