This quarter honoring Alabama's Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site represents the conclusion of the U.S. Mint's ambitious fifty-six coin series dedicated to the beauty of America's national parks. The Tuskegee Airmen, a diverse group of both men and women, are remembered for their heroic actions during World War II.
Powerful Airfield Scene
Obverse: The obverse is adorned with an image of George Washington, the first President of the United States. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "QUARTER DOLLAR" are inscribed. Sculptor John Flanagan created the rendition of the Founding Father for the introduction of the Washington Quarter series in 1932.
Reverse: The reverse features a Tuskegee Airman pilot securing his flight suit, while proudly gazing up as two P-51 Mustangs fly overhead, with the Moton Field control tower in the background. The above inscription, "THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS," recognizes the Airmen's' participation in the fight against fascism abroad, as well as their domestic struggle with racial discrimination. A frame around the image bears the inscriptions "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," "ALABAMA," "2021" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
