2021 South Africa Silver Krugerrand Proof Coins

The Silver Krugerrand Series is a relative newcomer and was introduced in 2017 to mark the 50th Anniversary monumental Gold Krugerrand series. The Silver Krugerrand Proofs are the numismatic collector's version of the coin. The coins share the same standard design with the Gold Krugerrand coins, but do carry a face value. The Silver Krugerrand is struck to proof quality on .999 fine silver planchets. The series is known for its limited mintages.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Paul Kruger, the first President of Zar, the Transvaal Province of South Africa. The portrait was crafted by Otto Schultz, the famous coin designer and die maker from Germany.

The reverse of the coins features the Springbok Antelope. This South African native animal is a longtime symbol of the South African nation and people. The design was brought to fruition by world-renowned South African sculptor, Coert Steynberg.

Krugerrand Background

The South African Gold Krugerrand is one of the most important coins struck in the world. The coin was first struck in 1967 as the first gold bullion coin backed by a government. Throughout the Seventies, the Krugerrand dominated the private gold ownership market across the globe. It wasn’t until 1979 that the Krugerrand received any competition when the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin was introduced. The krugerrand was quickly followed by the Chinese Gold Panda and the Mexican Gold Libertad coins and finally the American Gold Eagle. The Krugerrand is simply a landmark coin, a global bullion earthquake, if you will. We are still feeling the aftershocks today. It is remarkable that the Silver Krugerrand Series was introduced fifty years after the Gold Krugerrand appeared on the scene.

South African Mint Background

The South African Mint strikes all the circulating coinage for South Africa and is a global leader in the production of collectible numismatic and bullion products. The roots of the organization go back to 1890 when it was chartered by Paul Kruger. Through the years it was closed and reopened periodically. It became an independent mint in 1941.
