Why order this 1 oz Gold Proof 2021 R50 South Africa Big 5 - Buffalo?

The South African Mint brings its Big 5 Series to a close with this stunning Gold Buffalo. Each coin in the series features one of the five most dangerous African animals to hunt on foot. This one features a mysterious yet deadly creature that is sometimes overlooked by tourists but is never underestimated by hunters.

  • This coin was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine gold.
  • This coin is 50 Rand legal tender in South Africa.
  • This coin is part of a mintage of just 600 pieces.
  • This is the fifth and final issue in the South African Mint's Big 5 Series.
  • The reverse has a bisected design that reveals a full buffalo when two coins are placed side by side.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Proof 70.
  • NGC certified this piece Ultra Cameo and First Day of Issue.
  • The grade comes printed on a Big 5 label.
  • The label was hand signed by Tumi Tsehlo.

Striking African Buffalo Design

Obverse: The coin's obverse features a detailed look at the exquisite creature. At the bottom of this face is the coat of arms of the issuing nation. The name of that nation, "SOUTH AFRICA," is inscribed along the rim to the left. The name of the series, "BIG FIVE," and date, "2021," are included along the rim to the right.

Reverse: This coin, like the others in the series, has a bisected design. The holder gets a full look at the creature when two coins are placed side by side. At the center of this face are two concentric circles. In those circles are inscriptions of the coin's face value, "FIFTY RAND," weight, "1 OZ," and purity, "AU 999.9."

Flawless PF70 UC FDI with Tumi Signature Big 5 Label

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided the grading information for this coin on a Big 5 label that was hand signed by former South African Mint Managing Director Tumi Tsehlo. NGC graded the coin Proof 70, thus indicating that it appears perfect under 5x magnification. The grading company also certified the coin Ultra Cameo (UC) and First Day of Issue (FDI). UC coins exhibit particularly sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields. The FDI designation is only given to coins that were submitted for grading through an exclusive process.
