Why purchase this Type I 2021-(S) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Emergency Production Struck at the San Francisco Mint?
2021 is a historic year for the American Silver Eagle. Not only is it the 35th anniversary of the series, but the year will also see two types of Silver Eagles, with a new reverse design planned to debut in mid-2021 and early issues receiving John Mercanti's original heraldic eagle reverse design. Due both to an anticipated high demand high demand and slow downs in the production cause by the current Covid-19 pandemic, the United States Mint decided to supplement production of bullion Silver Eagles at the San Francisco Mint. They are usually struck at the West Point Mint. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) designated the San Francisco run "Emergency Production," making this coin all the more special for collectors.
Exquisite Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
Obverse: The coin's obverse bears Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty design, which appeared on the half dollar from 1916-1947. Liberty carries laurel and oak branches while draped in the American flag against a backdrop of the rising sun. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is included on the right and the date, "2021," is noted at the bottom. Adolph Weinman was a prominent sculptor whose work remains on display in many American cities. His best known numismatic contributions are the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime.
Reverse: John Mercanti's reverse design was adapted from the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle protects a union shield under thirteen stars. Rim inscriptions encircle the image, reading, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti spent nearly four decades with the US Mint, part of which time he served as its twelfth Chief Engraver. He is the most prolific designer of coins and medals in American history.
