Why purchase this: 2021-(S) Type I 1 oz American Silver Eagle Emergency Production Struck at San Francisco Mint?
The United States Mint took the step of producing bullion Silver Eagles at the San Francisco Mint to both combat pandemic-related production delays and to keep up with collector demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent years, the West Point Mint has typically handled the striking of bullion Silver Eagle coins. The 2021 Silver Eagle is particularly desirable since it is one of the final times that the coin will bear the original heraldic eagle reverse design of John Mercanti, which is set to change mid-year.
Featuring the Patriotic Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Obverse: Adolph Weinman's iconic Walking Liberty design graces the obverse yet again. Draped in the American flag, Liberty carries laurel and oak branches against a backdrop of the morning sun emerging from beyond the horizon. Inscriptions on the obverse include her name, "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021." Adolph Weinman is most famous for the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. He also designed several medals and was a prominent sculptor, whose work can still be seen in cities across America.
Reverse: John Mercanti's adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States appears on the reverse for the final time. Thirteen stars arranged in a triangular formation represent the original states above an eagle, which spreads its wings while protecting a union shield. Rim inscriptions offer essential information about the coin, including its country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," its metal content, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He designed more medals and coins than anyone else in the history of the institution.
