Why order this Uncirculated 2021-P Christa McAuliffe Commemorative Silver Dollar?
The U.S. Mint marks 35 years since one of the most shocking days in American history with this Christa McAuliffe Silver Dollar. On January 28, 1986, Americans watched in awe as Christa McAuliffe sought to become the first teacher in space. Along with six other astronauts, she boarded the Challenger Space Shuttle and prepared for launch. Just 73 seconds after liftoff, the shuttle broke apart, tragically killing all seven crew members. President Ronald Reagan postponed his State of the Union address, which was scheduled for that night, and instead gave a moving address from the Oval Office.
Poignant McAuliffe and Students Design by Emily Damstra
Obverse: Phebe Hemphill sculpted a design that was created by Laurie Musser for the obverse. It shows McAuliffe with a hopeful gaze. Her name, "CHRISTA MCAULIFFE," is inscribed prominently near the top. The date, "2021," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "LIBERTY" are also inscribed on this face.
Reverse: Emily Damstra's reverse design, which was sculpted by Joe McKenna, depicts McAuliffe pointing to the sky as students look with wonder. The logo of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology is set to the left, and seven stars in the sky represent the astronauts that America lost on the tragic mission. At the top of this face is the inscription, "I TOUCH THE FUTURE. I TEACH." Spreading throughout the rest of the rim are the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "ONE DOLLAR," and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
