Why purchase this 2021-P Commemorative Christa McAuliffe Uncirculated Silver Dollar?
17% of Americans watched live in awe as Christa McAuliffe and six other astronauts prepared to set off into space on January 28, 1986. As mouths still gaped from the awesome power of liftoff, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart resulting in the deaths of the seven crew members on board. McAuliffe was supposed to be the first teacher ever in space. That night, President Ronald Reagan consoled the nation from the Oval Office as he delivered one of the most important speeches of the 20th century. This coin marks the 35th anniversary of the disaster.
Striking McAuliffe Designs
Obverse: Christa McAuliffe is shown with a hopeful gaze on the obverse. The image was designed by Laurie Musser and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. McAuliffe's name is inscribed prominently in the upper left, while additional obverse inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "2021," and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Reverse: Joseph Menna sculpted Emily Damstra's reverse design. McAuliffe points upward to the future as three students look on in amazement. Seven stars represent the astronauts whose lives were lost on the mission, and the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology logo is set off to the left. The inscription "I TOUCH THE FUTURE. I TEACH," is at the top of the rim. On other parts of the rim are the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "ONE DOLLAR," and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
