Why buy this 2021-(P) Type I American Silver Eagle Struck at the Philadelphia Mint - Emergency Production?
To keep up with the customer demand and mitigate production interruptions caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the U.S. Mint authorized a production of bullion Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint. Typically these would be struck at the West Point branch. This coin is the perfect keepsake from the period, as it was part of that historic run which included 495,000 pieces. The 2021 edition is also part of the 35th anniversary issue of the Silver Eagle and is also one of the last bullion releases in the series to include John Mercanti's original heraldic eagle reverse design, which will be replaced during 2021.
Featuring John Mercanti's Heraldic Eagle Design for the Final Time
Obverse: On the obverse is Adolph Weinman's famous Walking Liberty design. Draped in the American flag, Liberty carries branches as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. Inscriptions on this face include the figure's name, "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021." Adolph Weinman is best known for designing the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. In addition to these and other numismatic contributions, he was also a sculptor, and much of his work can still be seen in cities across the United States.
Reverse: Thirteen stars represent the original states above an eagle that protects a union shield on the reverse. The image was designed by John Mercanti, who used the Great Seal of the United States as his model. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti is the most prolific designer of coins and medals in American history. He spent nearly four decades with the U.S. Mint, including time as the institution's twelfth Chief Engraver.
