Why order this Emergency Production 2021-(P) American Silver Eagle Struck at Philadelphia Mint?
The Silver Eagle is one of the world's most popular bullion coins, and the U.S. Mint strives to keep up with demand in the face of production delays related to the current covid-19 pandemic. Accordingly, the Mint began supplementing its typical West Point bullion production with a run at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin was part of that authorized production run, making it a fantastic keepsake from these interesting times we are living in. This piece is also one of the final bullion Silver Eagle issues in the series to bear the original heraldic eagle reverse design of John Mercanti before the design changes later in the year.
Featuring John Mercanti's Heraldic Eagle Design
Obverse: On the obverse is the iconic Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman. The image shows Liberty draped in the American flag as she carries laurel and oak branches in the morning sun. Inscriptions on the obverse include her name, "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021." Adolph Weinman contributed two of the most important pieces to America's early 20th century numismatic renaissance, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He was also a sculptor, and his work remains on display in numerous American cities.
Reverse: John Mercanti based his reverse design on the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle protects a union shield while holding arrows and an olive branch under thirteen stars. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim. John Mercanti is the most prolific designer of coins and medals in the history of the U.S. Mint. He spent over three and a half decades with the institution, including time as its Chief Engraver.
