Why buy this Emergency Production 2021-(P) American Silver Eagle Type I Struck at the Philadelphia Mint?
The American Silver Eagle marks its 35th anniversary in 2021. The anniversary comes during the covid-19 pandemic, which has caused production delays for the popular bullion series. To keep up with customer demand in the face of such slowdowns, the U.S. Mint struck 495,000 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint in what was dubbed an "emergency production" by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This coin is part of that historic run.
Featuring the Exquisite Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Obverse: Liberty appears the picture of patriotism as she carries branches in the foreground while draped in the American flag. She walks against a background of the rising sun. This design comes from Adolph Weinman's iconic Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Inscriptions on the obverse note the figure's name, "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021." Adolph Weinman is best known for designing two of American history's most famous coins, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He also made other numismatic contributions and created numerous sculptures that can still be seen in many American cities.
Reverse: John Mercanti crated his reverse design specifically for this series. Based on the Great Seal of the United States, it features an eagle guarding a union shield under thirteen stars, which represent the original states. Encircling the image along the rim are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, a post he held for just part of his nearly four decades with the US Mint. During his career, he has designed more coins and medals than anyone else in American history.
