Why order this Philadelphia Mint Emergency Production 2021-(P) Type I American Silver Eagle?

In an effort to keep up with customer demand for Silver Eagles during the covid-19 pandemic, which has continued to cause production delays, the U.S. Mint struck 495,000 2021-dated bullion Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) identified this supplementary run as qualifying for their "Emergency Production" designation. This coin was part of that historic run. This issue is also notable because it marks the Silver Eagle's 35th anniversary and one of the final times that John Mercanti's Heraldic Eagle reverse design will appear in the series before it is replaced in mid-2021.

  • This coin is $1 U.S. legal tender.
  • It was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
  • This is part of the 35th anniversary issue of the Silver Eagle.
  • The Silver Eagle is one of the most popular bullion coins in the world.
  • This coin is part of the final bullion issues that will feature John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse design.
  • This piece was one of 495,000 in an authorized striking of the coin at the Philadelphia Mint.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this piece Mint State 69.
  • NGC certified this coin First Day of Issue.
  • Grading information comes on a Heraldic Eagle label.
  • The coin has been set in a black core holder.

Featuring Adolph Weinman's Patriotic Walking Liberty Design

Obverse: The coin's obverse bears the historic Walking Liberty design that first appeared on Adolph Weinman's Half Dollar. Draped in the American flag, Liberty carries laurel and oak branches while extending her right hand to greet the new day as the morning sun begins to rise. The inscription "LIBERTY" arches over the image, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021," are also included on this face. Adolph Weinman designed two of the best known coins in American history, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. In addition to these and other contributions to numismatics, he was also a sculptor, and much of his work is still on display in various American cities.

Reverse: An eagle protects a union shield under thirteen stars while clutching arrows and an olive branch in John Mercanti's reverse design. Mercanti used the Great Seal of the United States as his model for the image. Along the rim are inscriptions that note the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," metal content, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti has designed more coins and medals than anyone else in the history of the US Mint. He was the institution's Chief Engraver for part of his nearly four decades in its employ.
