Why order this Type I 2021-(P) Silver American Eagle Struck at Philadelphia Mint - Emergency Production?
In an effort to keep up with customer demand and to mitigate Covid-19 related production delays, the United States Mint authorized a production of bullion Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint, which are typically struck at the West Point branch. This coin comes from that historic run which include 495,000 pieces. This is also one of the final bullion issues of the Silver Eagle to include John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse design, which will be replaced later in the year.
Classic Heraldic Eagle Design by John Mercanti
Obverse: The coin's obverse bears the iconic Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman. Taken from his Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the image features an American flag draped Liberty carrying branches in the early morning sun. Her name, "LIBERTY," is joined by the date, "2021," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," among the obverse inscriptions. Adolph Weinman made several contributions to America's numismatic renaissance of the early 20th century, including the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He was also a sculptor, whose work can still be seen in many American cities.
Reverse: The reverse design was based on the Great Seal of the United States. Designed by John Mercanti, it consists of thirteen stars and an eagle protecting a union shield. Three rim inscriptions encircle the image. They read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He has designed more medals and coins that anyone else in its history.
