Why purchase this pristine 2021-P Specimen Silver 5 oz. Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site Quarter?
Alabama's Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site is honored on the 56th and final installment of the U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful quarters series. During World War II, Tuskegee was the only primary flight training facility available to African-American pilot U.S. Army Air Corps.
Design Celebrating the Heroism of the Tuskegee Airmen
Obverse: The obverse features John Flanagan's iconic portrait of George Washington. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "P" and "QUARTER DOLLAR" are inscribed. In addition to medallic work, Mr. Flanagan is credited with larger sculptures, including a 1924 bronze portrait bust of his mentor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1907 Double Eagle designer).
Reverse: A pair of P-51 Mustang aircraft are depicted on the reverse, in flight near the Moton Field control tower, while a foreground pilot watches with pride from the ground. The inscription above, "THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS," describes the Airmen's double battle, with fascism abroad and with discrimination on their home soil. A frame surrounding the image bears the inscriptions "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," "ALABAMA," "2021" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
