The U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters series concludes with this 56th release honoring the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in the state of Alabama. The site was established in 1998 to memorialize the heroic efforts of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. The Tuskegee pilots were among the most accomplished and respected fighter groups of the War.
A Tribute to the Bravery of the Tuskegee Airmen
Obverse: The obverse portrait of George Washington sculpted by John Flanagan has graced the U.S. quarter since 1932. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "P" and "QUARTER DOLLAR." Mr. Flanagan's design credits also include the Rotunda Clock at the Washington D.C. Library of Congress.
Reverse: The inscriptions "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," "ALABAMA," "2021" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" surround the reverse image, which depicts a pilot in the foreground proudly watching a pair of P-51 Mustang aircraft fly past the Moton Field control tower. The inscription "THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS" recognizes the Airmen's fight, with both fascism overseas and discrimination domestically.
