Amazingly Lifelike Pilot Portrait
Obverse: Sculptor John Flanagan's 1932 rendition of Founding Father George Washington is located on the obverse, surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "QUARTER DOLLAR" and the Philadelphia Mint mark "P." Mr. Flanagan was a well-known medallic artist, who began his career as a studio assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1907 Double Eagle designer).
Reverse: The reverse features a pilot standing near the Moton Field control tower, as two P-51 Mustang aircraft glide by overhead. The inscription "THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS" sweeps above the image, describing the Airmen's fight against fascism abroad and struggle with domestic discrimination. Inscriptions include "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," "ALABAMA," "2021" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," with ".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE" on the coin's smooth edge.
