Why does this 2021 Queen's Beasts White Greyhound of Richmond 1/4 oz. gold bullion coin belong in your collection?
The Royal Mint launched the Queen's Beasts series in 2016. Imagery for the ten-coin series is inspired by the ten heraldic statues that stood guard at the Queen's coronation in 1953 as symbols of her heritage. This issue commemorates the White Greyhound of Richmond, originally the badge of John of Gaunt, who was Duke of Lancaster, Earl of Richmond and father of King Henry IV.
Magnificent Heraldic Design
Obverse: An elegant right facing portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II adorns the obverse, surrounded by a guilloche patterned field. Inscribed "ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG. F.D., 25 POUNDS."
Reverse: The reverse features a White Greyhound contrasted against a chainmail field, supporting a shield ornamented with the Tudor Rose and the Royal Crown. Inscribed "WHITE GREYHOUND OF RICHMOND" and "1/4 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9 2021." Each image includes the initials "JC," crediting sculptor Jody Clark with their impressive imagery. Mr. Clark has produced designs for The Royal Mint since 2012.
